Civilised readers, I must actually vent about a "real" issue. It is something that I have endured for many years now. Every aspect of domestic travel service with UA that I have experienced SUCKED. It is only with the international portion of their business that the level of their service is average against other international carriers - as in, not exceptionally good, but I can at least settle in for the next **hours and not worry about any unjustified display of gruff, crabby, brusque behaviour directed to me from the ground and flight staff.

I will not torment you here with the evidentiary anedotes that I have unwillingly gathered in the last decade.

It's an oldie but absolutely deserving of attention. This heralding act of SoW may carry a bit of cheese but really, in light of the prevalent greed and selfishness in modern society, occurrences of respectful consideration for others needs to be highlighted.

Bjørnar Håkensmoen, Norwegian coach for the Norwegian Olympic ski team, without hesitation stepped forth from the sideline and handed a ski pole to rival Canadian skier, Sara Renner, when her pole broke during the women's team sprint at the 2006 Torino Olympics. Ms. Renner won a silver medal while Mr. Haakensmoen's Norwegian skier was edged out to fourth place. This is the kind of behaviour that we here at SoW wholeheartedly support and applaud.

Canada's Sweet Gift to Norway

The Canadian Ambassador to Norway, Jillian Stirk, today presented a gift of 7,400 cans of maple syrup from the Canadian people to Mr. Bjørnar Hakensmoen.

"This gift was a spontaneous outpouring of appreciation from the Canadian public, in response to a remarkably selfless act by Mr. Håkensmoen. The Embassy of Canada is honoured to be involved in this project, which so clearly demonstrates - and will strengthen - the people-to-people ties between our countries. Canadians and Norwegians have well-deserved reputations for being caring and generous -- this story simply reinforces that belief".

During the women’s team sprint at the Torino Olympics, a Canadian skier, Sara Renner, broke her ski pole, but Bjørnar Håkensmoen came to her rescue and gave her a new one. With the new pole, Sara and her teammate Beckie Scott went on to win the silver medal.

Mr. Håkensmoen claimed he simply reacted like any good sport should, telling the newspapers that Norwegian policy calls for handing over poles or skis in time of need. Canadians were thrilled with this story, which so beautifully exemplifies the Olympic spirit and fair play.

To show their gratitude, a group of Canadians devised a unique way of thanking Bjørnar Håkensmoen and Norway - with Canada's national sweet treat, maple syrup! With the help of the The Independent Communications Dealers Association of Canada Inc. and Canadian company Bell World/Espace Bell, Canadians all across the country bought cans of maple syrup and attached personalized messages of thanks and admiration. Seven thousand, four hundred cans were purchased and sent to Norway, and the Embassy of Canada in Norway has been given the honourable task of distributing them.

The maple syrup was presented to Mr. Håkensmoen, who in turn presented it to Chess Communications of Norway, in exchange for a 150,000 NOK donation to the Norwegian Cancer Society. The Embassy of Canada, Mr. Håkensmoen, and Chess Communications will distribute the maple syrup throughout Norway to the people of Norway with the assistance and participation of the Norwegian Coastal Express (Hurtigruten).

2 The phrase 'I'd say it's bang-on average, if not slightly bigger'. Best to steer clear of the size issue. Like us talking about your weight, it can only lead to misunderstanding and hurt.

3 Obsessive accounts of your diet and exercise regime. Men like skinny women, true. But they dislike being exposed to the borderline eating disorders and pathological obsessiveness that produce them. And curvy and sane always beats mad and thin. Eventually.

4 The accusing phrase, 'What's wrong with the blue dress, then?' after we have said we like the red one.

5 Any details of your day at work. Although men can find the most basic things endlessly fascinating - the number of buttons on their shirts, farting - they will suddenly develop ADD when it comes to your professional life. Unless you are a porn actress. No, actually, even then...

6 Any information about things you thought about buying. We are perfectly happy to admire actual purchases, but yearning for those phantom shoes/dress/bag exasperates us.

7 Stories about other men patronising you. This will give us an irresistible urge to ruffle your hair and say in a kids-TV voice, 'Awww, did dey? Did dey do dat to oo?' I know, sometimes we're asking for trouble.

8 The word 'Fine' as a stand-alone sentence. The scariest syllable in the female vocabulary.

9 The sound of weeping. It destroys us.

10 Any details of strife you may be having with your female friends. The endless round of hurt and rapprochement that constitutes girls' friendships mystifies us. If she's that much trouble just delete her from your bloody mobile.

11 The phrase, 'Hang on, I'll just reply to this text before we order'. We want first claim on your attention, woman.

12 The phrase, 'Can you turn over, you're snoring'. Great, that's both of us awake.

13 The words 'Am I special? Am I?' Especially if you are drawing a circle around our nipple with your finger at the time.

14 Anyone else's name, in your sleep.

15 Your dreams. Unless we're in them. And in a good light, too. If not, save 'em for the shrink.

We girls pretend to like clothesshopping for a lot of reasons, but really, the truth is that we shop to look cute so that we can get laid. There, I said it. The thing about this is that it sucks. Aside from making me spend too much money, this also creates too much pressure and too much competition and it makes me feel bad about myself. I hate this kind of shopping, even though I occasionally have to do it. The only kind of shopping I like is the kind André Leon Talley doesn't fax about. It's the kind you do the morning after you get laid--walk-of-shame shopping.

I found this out about four years ago, when my long-term college boyfriend--the guy I lost my virginity to--and I finally broke up in a barn blaze of angst. Until then I had never been a big shopper. Getting guys to like me had usually involved relying on my personality, and having a personality in high school was exhausting. I didn't appreciate it until my mid-twenties, when I found myself suddenly single and in desperate need of some immediate male company. Even then I had my doubts about my ability to close the deal. My first instinct--and I'm ashamed to admit this--was that if I was going to find a new boyfriend, I needed to buy some sort of sparkly stuff. Or something.

Unlike men, who seem confident from birth that they can wear mesh Jets tank tops and still find action, women, for a variety of reasons, feel like unless we walk into a party wearing the latest variation on the sequin-top-tight-jeans-$250-heels sexy uniform, we will not be able to compete with our more sartorially well-equipped sisters. I'd always thought I was above this kind of thinking but as I unhappily found out, I was not. Shopping is awful, I decided.

Or so I thought until it all actually worked, and I did get laid, and I found myself waking up at some dude's house on a Thursday morning late for work. There was no way I could show up to my office in the same clothes I'd worn the day before: My closest coworkers are like a second family and are capable of noticing whether or not I've flossed. I would be mocked and interrogated or, even worse, mockingly interrogated. And so I found myself praying, as I approached the Gap on 57th and Eighth--across the street from my office--that it would be open. And it was. And it was good. Since that one memorable morning, I've been back to my trusty shame-Gap countless times. My post-sex/pre-work shopping experience has become almost as fun a part of dating as the sex itself--sometimes even more so. What better guilt-free excuse is there for buying yourself a little somethin'-somethin' than de-slutting before work?

There are so many things I love about walk-of-shame shopping. First off, when your only goal is to step out of your skank clothes, anything that even vaguely fits will do. Because these clothes only have to work for the day, they can and should be cheap and disposable.

Second, there's an externally imposed time limit on the whole process. Business is business, and there can be none of the usual fiddle-faddling about for hours as you decide between which of the eight colors of tank top looks best with your skin tone (pink, by the way, is usually the answer). I'm in and out of there in less than 12 minutes, not counting the extra two for sheepishly changing in the dressing room into what I've just purchased.

Last and most important, if I'm shame shopping, I'm probably feeling pretty good about what I look like. All the worry about the hotness of my outfit has been assuaged, at least for a little while, by remembering that when a guy really thinks you're hot, he just wants your clothes off. Plunking down $9.99 for tank tops at 9:30 a.m., I can't help but think of SJP lip-synching to that song in the Gap ad--"I Enjoy Being a Girl." This is probably not what the marketing execs had in mind, but screw 'em. ♥

Observational Remarks - Fug Fridays: hair club for men and a gypsy

Hello Readers/Browsers/Hanger-on'ers!

I'm rolling around the idea of doing a "Fug Fridays" entry on every Friday (schedule permitting), because sadly, my eyes are afflicted by a lot inexcusable and unforgivable fug throughout my trekking. I internalized most of these encounters but I figured that it's not worth dying of a heart attack because I didn't release the pent-up shock from seeing a head-to-toe multi neon-pastel colour combo that made me nearly throw up the contents of my dear belly. For entries such as these, photographic evidence is necessary to convey a clear message and I've actually posted an entry like this before in the manner of Spirit Fingers and would love to do more if I wasn't so worry about my sweet ass being violated by some Vicodin-crazed-wannabe-Kimora who caught me taking the pic. 'Cause, you know, I need to preserve what ever inspiration that generates the type of endearments men have shown for my very non-extraordinary ass. Thus, I humbly offer my own pictorial renderings below. They may not suffice but I hope they will help you conjure up the image that pained my vision.

Credit given to where it's due: My Fug Fridays project is partially inspired by Go Fug Yourself, Spirit Fingers, and the wonderful Puntabulous. (and also by my inspiring lunch of squished up grape tomatoes, olives, basil, dashes of Parmesan and garlic soaked in rosemary, chili olive oil and coffee!! Sweet strong Ghirardelli chocolate coffee - I'm now revitalized!!!! Trust me, everyone loves a revitalized SoW.) And wholly inspired by those who CHOOSE to degrade our collective aesthetic environment! Yay!

So are saucer-size bald spots with the front bit of hair gelled up. Was he thinking he could hide it from most of the public world when seen from the front? From just a slightly elevated view, it looks ridiculous. It's like he's trying to liven up a tonsure.

And then there’s the gypsy girl.

This picture actually makes her look better than her in reality. Some Asian (Chinese, I suspect) chick with a dopey look in her eye and grin to match, about 5’4, a blocky body (I gave her a more defined waist in my pic b/c I can’t draw various body types – very evident that my parents' $ was wasted on my childhood art classes), plus a black oversized windbreaker over the outfit. It was like this block of autumn leaves walking (zig-zagging a bit, so actually it was like this shifting formless blob) towards me. Maybe she doesn’t have a blocky build but the layers of misconstrued pieces of clothing hid any outline of body parts except for the crocheted black cardigan ballet wrap. My god. I did a double-take. I seriously thought she was wearing a bra on top of her long sleeve beige shirt. I dunno if it was a size too small or if it was not worn correctly but that wrap was the only thing that defined a body part – and it was her boobs. It’s like, before stepping out, she took a last look in the mirror and realized in the course of putting herself together, she became a block form and tied on the wrap at the last minute in order to define some curve - and well, she heard boys like boobs.

Adding up all the visual factors, I couldn’t figure out if she had lost her marbles or if she just returned from a pleasing episode of booty call. I couldn’t stop looking until she was out of my sight! For a second I was worried about her but was overcome by being off-putted and slightly terrified as I was afraid she was smiling at me b/c she was gonna approach me about something. I wasn’t afraid of her b/c she looked too dopey to pull a knife on me but I was just afraid that I wouldn’t be able to be cordial.

Theatrics/Visual - CNN's own Miz Bouffant

For the record, I have no qualms about Nancy Grace. She's good at what she does - bringing current legal issues into relevant terms for the everyday viewers without the dumbing down - much better than Court TV. So my appreciative impression was shakened when I encountered her show on CNN a few nights ago. CNN has certainly upped the degree of sensationalism in the presentation of the show and Nancy Grace herself. From the opening sequence to Nancy's melodramatic intro and her new highlighted-a-la-peacock bouffant hair and make-up to match (above photo is an old one and does not depict the fabulous new look), I felt like I was watching the opening act of a circus when all the clowns come out. Nonetheless, I stuck around for Nancy's 2 cents on this and that murder trials and I got more air than I do in a souffle.

Highlights from the transcript (to note in bold and my beefs in red):

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Tonight, breaking news out of a Tennessee courtroom. The wife of a beloved and highly popular minister found dead in his own home, Selmer, Tennessee. Tonight, on the eve of his funeral, his wife appears in court for arraignment on charges, murder one. Big question not whodunnit but why? The defense already marshalling the evidence.
And tonight, the entire city of Milwaukee, one million strong, in an intense search for two little boys, 11 and 12 years old. They vanished from a local basketball court one week ago. Tonight, police launch a criminal investigation.

DAULTON: Today was an initial appearance. It`s just her first appearance. She was read her rights, just to make sure that that`s all on record.

I caught the first episode of the 5th season of The Surreal Life, and I was surprisingly impressed by Janice Dickinson. She's not dumb or pretentious. From what I have seen of her from America's Next Top Model (and *groan* that one is just getting dumber and dumber in every way), my impression of her was "annoying hot air". Within the context of the Surreal Life and its participants, Janice is quick-minded and has some substance. What more can you ask for?

I’d rather be blessed with that than with looks. b/c deep down, Diddy knows his looks alone have no chance to save his ass if need be. It’s better to look like you’re wearing something that fits than like you’re wearing a trend. Then why did you date J.Lo??!

6. Women are going to tell you they love a man who’s huggable—that they like something they can hold on to—but at the end of the day, nothing compares to a toned body. There’s nothing wrong with letting it all hang out, but when you care, it shows.

7. I’m not just saying this because I’m a black man—I love all my brothers and sisters of other colors—but we are the most flavorful race. Please expand on that.

No worries, for I have finally come to accept the truth that I enjoy reading Details and can publicly (well, gingerly) admit that I buy it for myself. His sister was sitting in a subway car when a very large man walked in. After a few glances, it occured to her that she really enjoys the food at McDonalds! It was just a simple ink-blot-esque incidence.

Logging out of the blogosphere

On an average morning, I get up, make coffee, sit down at my computer
and check my e-mail before rushing out into the blogosphere -- a place
I have recently decided to vacate for good.

First, I would visit the celebrity sites -- a sordid collection of
gossip and venom peddlers, entertaining enough to get the columnist's
bile flowing. Gawker.com is a New York-based site that specializes in
celebrity takedowns disguised as sightings ("Lindsay Lohan was there
with a pretty large posse. Only two bathroom trips and she seemed to
be holding it together alright. She's still way skinny, BTW"). Then
there's Gofugyourself.com, a website devoted to cataloguing and
revelling in the truly astonishing and seemingly endless litany of
celebrity fashion mishaps.

After that, I might check out some American and Canadian
political/media blogs (Wonkette, Daily Kos, Paul Wells, Andrew Coyne)
before moving on to more "established" information sources.

The day I decided to swear off the blogosphere was the morning I
decided to plug my own name -- and the names of several other writers
I know and admire -- into the search engine at technorati.com, a site
known as Blogger HQ (it claims to itemize every new blog on the
Internet; last time I checked, the head count was more than 28
million). The results of my search were grim: countless chat rooms
full of bitter unpublished writers venomously slagging published ones
-- their terrible spelling, poorly constructed sentences and
outrageous amounts of displaced hatred and envy a testimony to why
they became bloggers in the first place.

Despite early optimistic reports that the Internet and all its
unregulated glory was going to supplant the mainstream media, in
reality the opposite has happened. When a blog is readable, the
blogger tends to be either one of two things: a professional
commentator who is providing a venue for public debate among his or
her own readers (as with Coyne and Wells), or a talented up-and-comer.
In the case of the latter, the blogger is inevitably lured into the
establishment with a book deal or position at an above-board
publication (as with the last two editors of Wonkette, who both
received six-figure book deals for outing Washingtonienne blogger
Jessica Cutler, who in turn received her own six-figure book deal and
an invitation to pose for Playboy).

So the underground media revolution is officially over. Further proof:
The February issue of Vanity Fair ran a photo featuring the Internet's
top commentators, including the typists behind Gawker, Defamer and
Wonkette. "The irony was sweet," Trevor Butterworth wrote last week in
the Financial Times. "Gawker was supposed to make fun of this kind of
inside-the-establishment posing. But the victory was sweeter: It was a
signal moment, a benediction from a magazine that, more than any
other, has become the plush chronicler of the celebrity
establishment."

My own problem with the blogosphere is not that it's selling out to
the mainstream, but that most of it is spectacularly boring. The
dominant quality is tedium: writers without editors, fact-checkers or
paying subscribers to keep them in check. As Butterworth succinctly
puts it: "If the pornography of opinion doesn't leave you longing for
an eroticism of fact, the vast wasteland of verbiage produced by the
relentless nature of blogging is the single greatest impediment to its
seriousness as a medium."

Why then, other than hearing the sound of his own voice unfettered by
editorial nips and tucks, does the blogger blog? One tempting
explanation is that what a blogger has to say is unfit for
publication. This is usually true. Much like teachers who teach
because they can't do, the blogger blogs because he can't publish.

But this doesn't hold up in all cases. Take my friend and peer David
Eddie. A Toronto-based novelist, journalist and screenwriter, Eddie
maintains a blog at http://www.davideddie.com even though he
invariably has several other professional writing projects on the go.
When I ask him (slightly incredulously) why on Earth he would bother
to write down his opinions for free, he shrugs.

"It's a good way to limber up. You get up in the morning, fire up a
blog, write the thing in 15 minutes and then you know what's on your
mind. I think it was Nabokov who said, 'How do I know what's on my
mind until I write it down?' "

Eddie's blog is whimsical and soul-searching, devoid of all the
self-serving spitefulness of many other whiners in the sphere. I find
myself checking it just to see what he's thinking. The beauty of the
blog, as he points out, is that it's informal and free-flowing, as
opposed to formal journalism, which can be stilted. For established
writers then, the attraction is creativity.

That's fine for some, but it isn't enough of a reason for me to go
on-line -- where the growing, unedited noise in the margins is too
loud to ignore -- when I can enjoy my favourite writers in more
established venues. If I'm supposed to feel part of some cool, fringe
community, or world-changing global discussion, I'm not getting it.

As Choire Sicha, formerly of Gawker and now a senior editor at the New
York Observer, told the Financial Times, the democratic promise of
blogs has produced more fragmentation at a time when seeing the bigger
picture is much more important.

"The word blogosphere has no meaning," he said. "There is no sphere;
these people aren't connected; they don't have anything to do with
each other. The world of blogs is like an entire newspaper composed of
op-eds and letters and wire-service feeds."

Which is exactly why I'm swearing off the blogosphere for good --
except, of course, for the celebs in bad outfits.

Rather, it would be grand if it were the story instead of this inexcusable pictorial example of boredom. *groan* I rarely get this bored on a flight. (and for the record, this was the first time my boredom drove my playing-with-the-camera to taking a non-descript pic of inside an aircraft.) There is only so much you can do after enduring Where the Heart is and In Her Shoes THREE FREAKING TIMES EACH. (And that's after I've actually watched the good ones also three freaking times each, and no, even after several re-reads of an entire size-edited issue of International Herald Tribune that felt like a NY Times in disguise and flipping through Patten's new autobiography ~props to him - the man can diss!~, I can't subject myself to Friends reruns.) This particular manifestation of boredom only came about b/c prior to this flight I was in a 2 week coffee - and more notably, espresso - drought and once I stepped aboard and the flight attendant approached me with the carafe of fresh-brewed Starbucks......dreamy exhilaration ensued! The champagne was brushed aside and I embraced the sweet enticing nutty aromatic fresh coffee with much verve. Hours later, when everyone else was zoned out post-stuffed corn-fed chicken breast, post-Kaiseki, post-multiple drinks and like me, exhausted the entire entertainment selection, I was still kicking around in my lazy-boy. I couldn't read anymore with tired eyes and my brain was numbed by multiple renditions of Natalie Portman doing a southern accent but my body screamed out the opposite. Damn sweet yummy soothing coffee...

And of course, the letdown came kicking me in my sweet arse later when the layover was too short for for any soul-saving sleep and I found myself stumbling onto my connecting flight and into a sleepy stupor immediately. That would have been soul-saving if we didn't touch down just after AN HOUR. That was just cruel. Poor me.
